The assaults from herdsmen has reached an alarming state where a week hardly goes by without a colossal attack that claims the lives of children, youth, and the aged. It is common knowledge that these marauders herdsmen kill, maim, loot, burn and destroy property, rape and even extract the unborn from their mother’s womb while there are alive. There is a grave lamentation in the land, and here are just a few:

“I didn’t become Governor to preside over dead bodies. No day passes without t h e blood of the innocent spilled by rampaging gunmen! Our people are being pushed too far by herdsmen! The old and the young have been slaughtered, children separated from their parents and many people chased out of their homes to sleep in the bush without food to eat. This is genocide and I call on all Nigerians to condemn the invasion, killings, destruction and occupation of Benue communities by herdsmen”
-Governor Samuel Ortom (2016)

“It is worrisome that the Fulani Herdsmen that kill over 400 Agatus in Benue State, raped women and destroyed farmlands in the North Central, South west and South South zones of Nigeria are walking the streets free…”
-Governor Ayodele Fayose (2016)

“Impunity evolves and becomes integrated in conduct when crime occurs and no legal, logical and moral response is offered. I am yet to hear this government articulate a firm policy of non-tolerance for the serial massacres that have become the nation’s identification stamp. I have not heard an order given that any cattle herders caught with sophisticated firearms be instantly disarmed, arrested, placed on trial, and his cattle confiscated.”
-Professor Wole Soyinka (2016)

The responsibly of stopping these herdsmen is our collective task of both the Government and the peace loving people who are assaulted. This is why this book, “Responding to Herdsmen Assaults” is written as a guide to abate this carnage.
